Welcomed Silence

The saving grace
of the funeral service
is rather than
the awkward volley
of stilted talk
with distant relatives,
it is perfectly
acceptable
to sit silently,
and offer
a supportive smile.

In this rare,
welcomed silence,
it becomes
profoundly clear
there are
no words big enough,
no sentiment tender enough,

to explain
what has been done
to my 49 year old cousin,
Johnny.

  1. Oh, Buddah, yes. I shudder to think what has happened, but I will delve into your blog and see... whatever it was, I am so sorry. There is an exquisite pain that runs deep in families, cuts like a razor, wrings tears when you thought there were none left. Peace, my friend. Amy

  7. Silence sometimes has bigger arms to hold us in comfort than any words can at times like this. May you feel that comfort in the coming days.

  9. The silence is needed to even comprehend the loss, accepting it is a wholly different matter.
