The Endless Detective

I admire
the puzzle solvers,
for they've more stamina
for the finite
than I.

Puzzles are solvable,
but mysteries
are not.

Curiosity
fuels the search,
and many soon tire
of the journey,
the plodding dedication,
the following
of false leads
into sometimes mocking
cul-de-sacs,
but it is our duty
to persist,
undeterred.

I am
the endless detective,
and everything
is a mystery,
and each revelation
leads to an even more
compelling mystery,

and thankfully,
I've nothing but time
as I dive in
deeper and deeper
exploring
the infinite
blue abyss,

chasing truth and beauty,
hour after hour,
day after day,
lifetime after lifetime.

    1. My two college degrees are both in sociology, and I remember one of my texts entitles "The Sociologist as Detective," so I guess I am finally using those degrees.

  4. I'm the girl detective and you're the endless detective; we should open an agency!

However, this marvelous poem deserves a whole lot more than a flippant comment. As I read along, it just got better and better, all the way up to the end. When you began, I thought your subject was going to be something small, and then you built it up to Life Itself, and that glorious thing, curiosity about it.

We'll never know, of course, exactly what we're doing here, or what the meaning of it all is; at least not on this side of the veil. Perhaps, though, it is that very elusiveness of the answers that makes the search for them all the more noble and all the more rewarding. It isn't as math problem, it's a masterpiece.

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment which I had to read three times before I understood because you used the word "veil" which my speed-racing mind read as "vile" "live" and "evil." I don't think it's about "knowing" the answer as much as it is loving the process of discovery.

Happy New Year, my pal in detective work! - Mosk
