Dreams, Like Tears

Keep your dreams
in that secret place
where you keep your tears.

Putting dreams onstage
forces a reaction
from audiences
more often prepared
for novelty
than transcendence.

Feed your dreams
in secret,
keep them close
to your heart

and let them out
every now and then,
just a little
to spark your imagination
on fire,
to keep that grayness
at bay.

Be forewarned:
someday
your dreams will
spill over and
spill out,
much like tears.

Steel yourself
for the laughter,

but if none is
forthcoming,
listen close
to your audience.

Listen for their tears,
their dreams,
and let them in.

  1. dreams like tears should be nurtured and cared for...not given out carelessly...they will get trampled on if you do....one day they will spill over...i like that day...and the end of listening for those of others as well...

  2. Hopes and dreams, one and the same, aren't they? Sometimes we have to find a way to make them come true, don't we? And, I guess, some things are just not meant to happen too.
Very thought provoking, touching write Mosk.

    1. Some dreams only look like dreams because they're unfocused. Some dreams are denied and for that I am thankful - sometimes. Thanks.

  3. I love this. Dreams like a treasure. Like a pet. And steeling yourself for the laughter when they spill out. Wonderful!

    1. Thanks, Jenny. Dreams are little gifts to oneself - but don't expect anyone else to see their value.

  5. I like this poem and I can relate. Dreams should be kept close to one's heart and not left out for others to thread on. Great piece.

  6. I really like the ending of this poem. It makes me think that once I acheive my dreams, it is my duty to encourage the dreams of others, become re-inspired by them, and perhaps help strangers acheive their dreams. We can always keep dreaming. :)

  7. I sense a bit of fear in striving for the dreams (the keeping them secret)... I love the ending,

    1. No, not in the striving, but in the world ridiculing dreams before they're big enough to defend themselves. Thanks so much, my friend.

Absolutely, for it is our dreams that keeps us going, gets us through the mundane and gives us hope. Well written, Buddah!

  10. Mosk, I enjoyed this poem. I have a lot of secret dreams, some that will never see light of day. They might spill out some day, but most days I doubt it. They have an audience of one. Your poem got me thinking........

  12. The timing of your words could not be more perfect for me. I love when that happens, mana from heaven just when my stomach won't stop growling. I'm definitely taking your words to heart. I so often am tempted to shout my dreams to the wind and it can be more harmful than helpful...

  13. Love this.... isn't this what we do here, with open link night, opening up our hearts and our dreams? I say, let them spill out, spill over... give them a chance to dance.

  19. We both wrote of tears. I let mine spill while you tuck them around dreams. I absolutely love the first stanza. It could be a poem on its own.

  20. Keeping them as pets is one way to handle it, riding them boldly to where they may take effect is another. Either way wounds will come. But, until they get strong and beg to be freed, food and nurture is exactly what they need.
