Downloads

I do not have
dreams
or
nightmares
when I sleep.

I get downloads.

The universe
exploits
my helplessness,
the vulnerability
of my unconsciousness

and downloads
what becomes
perception
into my
unsecured brain.

Most nights
the download
is an unholy melange,
of doubt,
curiosity,
fear
and transcendence.

I pray that hackers
will not attempt
to break through
the rudimentary
security measures
I’ve installed
so I can operate
with the predictable
smoothness of glass,
of a perfect machine.

Some nights
the download is so real
I wake up scared,
praying to undo
what I saw in
the download.

Some nights
The Great Coder
compiles the lines
and I awaken
fresh and eager
to live out
these commands.

“So, then,
are you merely a Puppet
of the Great Coder?
What about
free will?”

I didn’t get here
because of any
free will choice
I made,
so I don’t know
what free will
means.

And, if free will
is something granted
by The Great Coder,
then can’t the code
be modified?

I don’t know,
just like
I don't know
the virgin birth,
life after death,
the mystery of the trilogy.

So,
I have faith
and hope
that the next
download
might clarify
things.

Pleasant dreams.

  1. Wow! that's another way of looking at it! The Great Coder has already written all the programs....so let's hope those pleasant dreams don't become corrupted. :)

  3. Oh, DOWNLOADS....yikes! when one is asleep and vulnerable. I get little snippets at random moments when I'm awake, of especially unconscious things I have done and said thru the years, and spend a lot of time muttering "stupid! stupid! stupid!" to myself.

  4. Really like how you've expressed your point of view on free will vs micro design...

  5. The Great Coder is a good one and I like the line about how we didn't get here by any choice, so what is free will? Maybe if the coder is God, the hacker is the devil.

  6. Ah, this take on dreams and nightmares through a coding lingo is both refreshing and delightful. The neural networks are quite a hefty combination of codes and wirings after all. Very well penned.

  11. Comparing dreams with downloads has given a totally new angle!
A great analogy...it reminds me of the movie 'Matrix'

  12. I rarely dream. Perhaps that is the root of my sleeplessness ~
