I’ve gotten to a point where
I don’t need to walk through
every beckoning doorway.
Most doorways really
do not offer
anything new anyways.
Should I leave the comforts
of my room just to
dance in some fiery meadow
merely because it is new
and looks exciting?
Going from room to room
I’ll never know more than
newness
and while newness
is its own intoxicant
it has also a built-in
obsolescence.
Still,
staying put
and never venturing out
into the throng of sticky and sweaty humanity,
I’ll never know who I am,
never see my reflection
in the faces of the weary and the hopeful.
This desire,
longing for connection
is proof of my humanity
and ultimately
I am a hostage
as we all are,
trapped somewhere between
peering through doorways
and yearning to enter
and moving quietly
in my room
among my books and things
content in my solitude,
as my mind
races on to the next thing
struggling to rest.

Holiday Poem for Absentee Fathers
"It’s holiday time again
and many of you
are prying yourselves away
from your televisions
and your new families
(the ones with the children
you chose to raise)
and you probably want to know
when everyone’s coming over
so you can have
your Norman Rockwell
picture-perfect
Thanksgiving
complete with laughing happy children
a bountiful turkey
and genuine warmth.
Well,
as someone who sees
the everyday injuries
that your past indifference
hath wrought,
let me respectfully say:
stay the fuck away.
If your children are really little,
don’t get their hopes up
only to be gone for another
stretch of hopeless emptiness,
they don’t know any better.
If your kids are old enough to have
forgiven you in the hopes
that they’d be able to salvage
some kind of familial bond,
don’t exploit that optimism,
it just isn’t fair.
So,
before you pick up that phone
to invite them over,
remember all the times
you didn’t call
or didn’t email
and treat this holiday
just like it was
any other day.
When you call
you reset their
Hope switch
and they become
little abandoned babies
all over again,
and it is cruel, indeed,
to keep abandoning the same
baby
over and over again.
Those of us
who are married
to your daughters
(the ones you never
made the effort to know)
and who raise your children
(the ones you just won’t make
that weekly visit for),
we carry them past
the gaping holes,
the bombed out craters
your absence wrought,
which pockmark the landscape
of their precious
and hopeful hearts.
Don’t call on the holidays
because it only underscores
how infrequent
your contact with them will remain.
Don’t call on the holidays,
those are the pay-off days
for the family who see them through
the rest of the year,
through every nosebleed,
every disappointment,
everything, everyday.
Those of us who do
the everyday heavy lifting
find it galling
to have to "share" alternating
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays
with the absentee father.
If you want
to keep your integrity,
stay the fuck away
this Thanksgiving and Christmas
just like you do
during the rest of the year.
Let your sons and daughters
have their day of thanksgiving
with the people
who really love them,
and take care of them
on the days that aren’t holidays.
After the holidays
then you can make contact,
and pick up that phone
everyday,
ask them how they’re doing
everyday,
console them when they’re down
everyday,
tell them you love them
everyday,
and keep making contact
and maybe by the time
the next holiday comes around
you will have earned
it."

Eyes Everywhere
What do you crave?
Make up your mind.
A fake
Jean Claude Van Damme
ass-kicking,
a heartwarming scene
hidden in
a Hallmark card commercial,
the cold hard dirty truth?
Pick your poison
because there's a world full
of meaningless
garbage
all waiting to distract us,
take our eyes off
the true deserving targets
of our vitriol.
How many
sit in quiet offices
wondering how to
to fuck up this corrupt system
and leave no fingerprints,
realizing as I type this
my boss may have installed
spyware
and is reading this
before you all do.
Never mind Google sending
every search to the FBI,
I keep looking
over my shoulder
and peering into
the air conditioning vents,
wondering "is that a camera?"
Is this the way a
patriot acts?
There are eyes everywhere
in every corner
of the rundown
mom and pop store
to the highest court
in the land.
Not only is
big brother watching
but we are watching
big brother
as he is watching us
and as long as
we are watching
something
then nothing will ever need
to be done or undone.
We are a nation transfixed
by smartphone screens
and television teats,
narcotized and pliable,
the true objects
of our desires.
The happy distraction machine
and the eyes of big brother
finally married in a culture
where everyone watches
everyone else,
keeping us all in check
so no one gets out of line
so no one does something
different,
as the rows of
black half-domes
peeking from the
Wal-Mart ceiling
watch us
and all eyes are distracted
from the wholesale sell-off
of civil liberties
in the name of fighting
terrorism.
We find reality tv
entertaining
because reality isn't,
and blah blah blah
and you're all probably
fucking bored by now.
So am I.
Change this channel.
I want to be amused.
Make up your mind.

KC
Just about everything
about him is
in transition,
not yet arrived.
Still wet and unformed
but I can sense
the outline
the nascent adult profile
and his unimaginable future.
His eyes are bright
and he sways from
left foot to right foot
unsure in most situations.
He is an odd admixture
of musculature and braces
and he has big dreams
big ticket dreams,
and I try to show him
that big ticket dreams require
big sacrifices
and long pants.
I know he’ll be
just fine and
maybe I don’t need
to stay on him
every second,
but that’s the
same way my dad
stayed on me,
and he earned my lifetime
of gratitude
love and
respect
and deep down
that’s what I want
from my son.
Love is not always
hugs and nice words
often
it’s honestly
showing your son
how the world works
enough times
so he’ll remember
the lesson
long after
the teacher
is gone.

Mount Rubidoux
I rode my bike
to the top of
Mt. Rubidoux.
I hadn't done
it recently,
so I wanted to see
if I could
still do it.
All the way
my quivering legs
my rioting heart
were both threatening
to desert me,
but somehow I made it
up that bastard
and I pulled my bike
into shady corner
of the mountaintop landing.
I was dizzy
lightheaded,
sucking in as much
oxygen as I could possibly inhale.
I laughed as I lied down
to keep from fainting,
"such a small mountain
and still it kicked your ass..."
my heart
kept raggedly pounding.
I have many other things
to tackle today
but I'm going
to savor this moment
up here.
As I enjoy this view
of my neighborhood
from a mile in the sky
I smiled
knowing the only way
to get such a view
is to make such a journey,
and often
the only way
to do it
is just
to do it.

The Teardrop Indictment
After decades
of male socialization,
they sneak up on me,
sometimes during
a tv rerun
or after hearing a story
of true altruistic love,
or if I hear an
especially perfect lyric
to an especially perfect
melody.
Something in my belly slips
and knocks something loose
in my chest
and it rises and catches
in my throat
and
down the tears fall,
and I should hate them
as my training dictates
but I cannot,
because I have known
tears caused by fear
and adrenaline
and despair that weighed upon me
like cement shoes,
but for the first time
I see life clearly
and I see how beautiful
it can be
and how sweet it can taste.
I also know how
fleeting it all is.
She brought all that
to me
by her touch,
her love,
in a place
far beyond words.
So I stand accused,
indicted,
and convicted
by my occasional
teardrops,
proof of my inescapable
humanity.

I Brush Her Hair
I brush her hair
because it relaxes her,
and I am transfixed
as I watch the waves
of long silken honeygold
sway with each stroke
of my hand
at my command
like a sorcerer-king.
I silently marvel
at my good fortune
as she watches the TV
unaware of my rapture,
thousands and thousands
of strands
each one
beautiful,
perfect,
strong.
I pray
my luck holds out
and that I am given
one day with her
for every hair on
her head.

My Catalogue of Mistakes
She rifles through
my catalogue of mistakes
looking for something new,
looking for new ways
to prick herself.
I tell her
"look at my new writing.
It's so much better."
She does,
but it's just not
as compelling a read
as the catalogue.
Everyone has their inventory
of drunken reverie,
bad carnal decisions,
wasted tears and hours,
complete with photographs
of the most compromising positions
in glorious color
each one perfectly suitable
for framing.
The wise person knows
to avoid scratching
that unreachable itch
which would dig a hole
deep into his soul.
I learned long ago
to keep my curiosity
about such ticklish things
on a short leash
because letting it run free
would only enslave me.
For I have been
a jealous monster
at times
and I hated it,
so I tried to leave it behind
by avoiding rear view mirrors
or unlocked journals
or photo albums from your past
where I've not been invited.
Everyone has a past
with luggage stamped
"Regret"
"Indiscretion"
"Loneliness"
"Loss"
and everyone has
their catalogue.
If someone
shares theirs with you
don't study it,
don't memorize it,
don't judge its contents
just accept it and move on,
lest you be added
to its pages.

Post-Marriage, July 1994
After five years
of steady dating,
we became engaged
and a year after that
we were married
on the day
before Valentine’s Day, 1994.
Our marriage was weak
and hollow
and it seemed
the only things
we had in common
were buying things
and a limited history
but I forced a sickly smile
and I went through with it,
but it felt wrong
immediately.
Very soon
after we were married
it must have hit her too
because she was leaving earlier,
staying out later
and eventually,
she chose
her computer programming teacher
over me.
I left on the day
before Independence Day,
taking only
what I could pack
into the trunk
of my Honda,
and even though
I felt I lost everything,
I knew I hadn’t.
I still had
me
and whoever that was,
I was determined to
hold on to myself.
I was alone
and my face burned
with tears and humiliation,
and I did a million
self-destructive things,
spent money I didn’t have,
recklessly crashing
into others
who I treated like
fleshy furniture,
but somehow
I couldn’t
do enough
to do me in.
So,
I dressed slovenly,
on my days off
I didn't shave,
I slept in.
I hid,
became reclusive,
emerging only to venture out
to the video store
or to get more pizza.
I watched TV and ate
and let myself heal
and lapse back
into the pre-marriage slob
of who I really was,
and that felt right
immediately.
It felt good
to be reunited with
myself again.

The Parachutists
Where we worship,
members come together
every week,
out of their fear,
of the dark,
death,
loneliness.
Beyond logic
and rational self-interest,
in the brief moments
after the opening prayer
everyone suspends disbelief
and bids each other good morning,
offering friendship and love.
Holding hands
they leap like parachutists,
holding onto each other
in free fall,
floating on love and faith
until they land
back in the world
where there are necessary
arbitrary boundaries.
It may not make sense,
but it doesn’t have to
make sense.
Enough parachutists
could change the landscape,
but they would have to keep
holding hands
long after they landed
hard
on this dark
and lonely planet.

Run Like a Child (For Rachel)
I wait for my daughter
to drive her home
when she is done
with middle school.
I remember her
younger
running to the car
-backpack bobbing and
her wide happy smile –
so giddy and alive
to see me.
Now she is changing,
becoming beautiful,
trying on new
phrases and associations
like they were hairstyles.
Her wide-eyed excitement
morphed into heavy-lidded
detachment
and slow moving feet
and slouching teenaged indifference.
I would never go back
to the awkward time
she is in,
I hated checking a million eyes
for confirmation
of what I was doing.
I watch her and I pray
that her blossoming
is more confident
less tortured
than mine was
I also pray that
sometimes
she’d run like a child
upon seeing me again.

Defined by My Weaknesses
Alcoholic.
Adulterer.
Liar.
Obese.
These self-imposed epithets
create the boundaries
of my self-concept.
I cannot drink
or sleep around
or tell a lie
or overeat.
I am kept on the
paths of sobriety
fidelity
integrity and
satiety
by these labels
and by the knowledge
that a thousand prurient eyes
and the possibility
of a chorus of
sadly clucking tongues
are all waiting for
my eventual failure.
So,
for those of you
keeping score:
alcohol-
23 and a half years
adultery-
not since I found the
one that would
wear my ring
lying –
would you even believe me?
obese –
I have to diet
to be considered
"just" overweight,
and for those of you
waiting for my
inevitable failure:
I’ll concede to you
the diet
but everything else
I keep close
like a scar
on my face,
so I’ll never forget
or get lazy
or slouch back
into the darkness.

Weenie-Reeto!
Growing up
my mom used to
cook leftovers and
roll them into
warm flour tortillas
to make burritos
out of anything
and everything.
It didn't have to be
refried beans or rice,
it could be scrambled eggs
and bacon
or chili colorado.
She wasn't prejudiced,
food was food.
So, here's my contribution
to the canon of Mexican cuisine:
take one
all-American hot dog
(the higher the fat content,
the more American)
and microwave it
for 30 seconds
on a paper towel,
and while that's cooking,
heat over an open flame
one authentic
made-with-lard
flour tortilla,
and allow it to burn
just a little bit
like Grandma Trini used to,
and then say
“the burned part
is good for you,”
next, unwrap a slice
of American cheese
and place it
on the tortilla,
top with the hot dog
and zap it another
30 seconds,
then squirt it with
a line of ketchup
(or catsup),
and roll it up
(don’t forget
to tuck the bottom in,
a rookie mistake)
and presto,
you have a weenie-reeto!
The perfect
all-American snack
for hungry
culturally-assimilated
Mexicans
everywhere!
Es delicioso!

Off-White
In pictures with Browns
I look White,
and in pictures of Whites
I look Brown.
Torn between two cultures
feeling like un tonto.
I grew up watching
the Brady Bunch
but listening
to Cheech and Chong.
When I caught a cold
I learned that chicken soup
is ok,
but menudo with
freshly ground oregano
worked better for me,
and a tricked out
Chevy lowrider
beat an SUV
hands down for me.
Pride in my heritage
didn’t start
with achievements or icons,
it started
when I was
no longer embarrassed
that I wasn’t
something else.
Not quite White
Not quite Brown:
Proudly, defiantly
Off-White.

Time and Luck
Drive and desire
they'll tell you
are what you need
to make it.
Also time
and luck,
the two dimensions
over which we
are powerless,
because the greatest
of all could be
on their way to
their
appointment with destiny,
and they'll miss their stop
or will be mistakenly shot
in a drive-by
or will have finally slept with
the right connection
who unexpectedly had
that 2nd heart attack
his doctor warned him about.
So while I try not
to whip myself
over my lack of
drive and desire
I also do not hold
God
accountable for the
breezy passage of time
or for the luck
bad and good
that visits me.
The fame machine
is very random
and waiting for it
is another form of
playing the lottery.
I'd rather enjoy it all
in this moment now
scratching out my insides
for someone other than
myself.
In case I am
unexpectedly found
dead at 42
perhaps these writings
will be my triumph
over my absence
time and luck.
they'll tell you
are what you need
to make it.

The Invisible Man
So many hours
of my anxious youth
were wasted
hoping that someone would
see me.
It was nerve wracking,
all that prep work
all that rehearsal.
A calculated appearance
and rarely the payoff
of a glance
or someone’s laughter
would come my way.
Now that I’m older
and there isn't anyone
to impress anymore,
I value my anonymity,
taking pains to dress down
not making eye contact
not saying anything,
because the anonymity
is as close as I can get to
invisibility:
I watch, study
all the grasping and yearning
specimens
in their vainglorious dance
-- what are they wearing?
-- why did they pick that tattoo?
-- how many warts bumps and boils
can the human neck suffer?
I smile,
content that
I don’t desire
an audience anymore,
as I slip
though the crowd,
stealth and unnoticed,
I convince myself
that I truly am
invisible
and maybe I’m
the only person here
who is truly alive.

The Angry Dandelion
The angry dandelion
is on fire again
and the house is on warning.
I wish I could
slip a disk into her
volcano shell and
see the world through
her filter,
what lights the fuse
and sets her off.
Her mother and I
try to bring her happiness
but we fail daily.
The house is already child-proofed,
now it needs to be
anger-proofed.
Dear Little Blonde Talking Monkey
don’t you see
we’d love to see you
bright and breezy?
For now,
something dark and brooding
lurks in you
waiting to surprise us
like a landmine,
but do not mistake our
motives:
we love you and just want
some happy memories
for ourselves,
and I wrote this today
just in case
someday in the future
if you ever think
we didn't do enough,
this is my
pre-emptive defense.
