The Iron Jew
steps into the ring,
tuxedo shirt
and bulging eyes
and craggy features,
sweat from his fore head
nervousness in his twitch,
he is a mountain
with punchlines
at his 1970s
new York nightclub.
Standing in the spotlight,
gauzed in cigarette smoke,
he delivers
line after line after line,
each one more powerful
than its brother before.
Cynics, skeptics and
shtarkers,
each come up and
each is knocked down,
but the sheer gravitas
and invention of this
survivor and his
world-weary shield.
He leaves the stage,
undoes the bow tie
slumps in the dressing room chair,
lights up a joint,
and waits for the next
challenger.
Scene change:
Thirty years later
on the other side
of America,
I come home
wrung out and hope spent
I go to the garage,
fire up my pipe
and queue up Rodney Dangerfield
on the Johnny Carson show
via YouTube
and
puff puff laugh
puff puff laugh
and his attack begins:
decades melt as
and he hits,
unrelenting;
each hit perfect,
and I begin my surrender:
sides aching,
he punches,
I’m sucking for breath,
he punches,
throws a three joke combo
with a topper
and I’m almost doubled over in pain,
joyful and liberating.
I have lost myself
and my worries
for a moment,
and I am grateful
as I catch my breath
and marvel that
the Iron Jew
has won again!
"These aren't poems. They're more like speeches from a movie that will never be made."

Downloads
I do not have
[Written for Imaginary Garden with Real Toads ]
dreams
or
nightmares
when I sleep.
I get downloads.
The universe
exploits
my helplessness,
the vulnerability
of my unconsciousness
and downloads
what becomes
perception
into my
unsecured brain.
Most nights
the download
is an unholy melange,
of doubt,
curiosity,
fear
and transcendence.
I pray that hackers
will not attempt
to break through
the rudimentary
security measures
I’ve installed
so I can operate
with the predictable
smoothness of glass,
of a perfect machine.
Some nights
the download is so real
I wake up scared,
praying to undo
what I saw in
the download.
Some nights
The Great Coder
compiles the lines
and I awaken
fresh and eager
to live out
these commands.
“So, then,
are you merely a Puppet
of the Great Coder?
What about
free will?”
I didn’t get here
because of any
free will choice
I made,
so I don’t know
what free will
means.
And, if free will
is something granted
by The Great Coder,
then can’t the code
be modified?
I don’t know,
just like
I don't know
the virgin birth,
life after death,
the mystery of the trilogy.
So,
I have faith
and hope
that the next
download
might clarify
things.
Pleasant dreams.

Christmas Present (For the Brokenhearted)
Christmas Past
stays in yellowed,
attic memories,
re-appearing as
days get short
and the nights become
a cold, black
collective,
and the ache
in my soul finds
its way
from my childhood
to now.
Christmas Future
invariably promises more-
conspiratorial familial laughter,
opulent –themed rooms,
quiet spiritual contentment-
and predictably,
delivers far less
than my covetous dreaming
could ever imagine.
Both Christmases
are illusions,
yielding only
red and green
pangs of sadness.
This year
I’m foregoing both
and becoming
Christmas Present.
Not
The Christmas Present,
but rather,
present,
fully here
this year.
If I stay present
in this time and place,
perhaps
I can sidestep
the pain and
the memories
that usually linger
well into
the next year.
Christmas Present
is my gift
to myself
this year.

Disoriented, Then Surprised
I look in the mirror
expecting a reflection,
but all I get is
programming.
I stare at the TV
expecting programming,
but all I get is
my reflection.
I close my eyes
and experience
this world
with my other senses,
and I am
instantly
disoriented,
then surprised,
and eventually
awakened.

Skeletons
The skulls
the bones,
lie in the dirt
in the desert,
among lonely cacti
against hot,
unforgiving skies.
They were once
alive with ambition,
inflamed with passion,
wracked with worry.
Now,
they are but
silent reminders,
mute witnesses
to the sheer folly
of empty bluster
and shiny objects.
Skeletons
bring the wisdom
that even the richest
among us,
those most privileged,
will share
the same
exact fate
with the humble.
Who will leave
a richer legacy,
the humble
who shared freely
the fruit
of their grace
or those
who lived
in opulent vanity,
clutching every crumb
to their bosom
lest it be stolen?
Skeletons
remind me
of what is
important.

The Siren Décolletage Mocks Me
Don’t confuse
their ubiquity
with mundanity.
Sadly,
in the employ
of marketing,
they are profaned,
on slick,
air-brushed
magazine covers.
Different hues,
fingerprint creases
and folds
and curves
curves
curves
in magical, mystical
sacred geometric
shapes.
“Save the Ta-Tas.”
“Squeeze your Boobies.”
Change your avi
for the month
and flash them
to the world.
Self-exploitation
for the greater good
is advocacy.
Still,
the mystery
of that delicate skin
upon the breastbone,
the hint of
shadows falling
in between,
still cast their spell
on me,
as I remain
in perpetual
outstretched
hunger
for connection,
for communion,
for restoration.
My lifelong desire
for embrace
to the eternally
warm, soft
female bosom,
to correct the deficiency
of a non-breastfeeding
mother,
remains unrequited,
as the magazine cover
silently mocks “no”
and you’re just
too tired.

VHS Seventh Heaven
Some people went to
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
and memorized it.
I was always too timid
to venture out that late
among all the self-congratulatory
freaks.
But when VHS came about
I was in seventh heaven:
memorizing the rhythm
the cadence of
Groucho and Chico
bantering in “Duck Soup”
William Holden
leaving Faye Dunaway
with pithy eloquence in
“Network”
Dustin Hoffman’s
grand deception
unraveling with
masterful despair
in“Tootsie”
Richard Dreyfuss
and Marsha Mason sparring
and falling in “The Goodbye Girl”
set an ideal for dialogue
rarely encountered
in real-life,
almost every Woody Allen
film,
(pre-Soon-Yi)
schlmiel neurosis
giving a defiant voice
to this misfit teenager
Ray Liotta as
the amoral narrator
in “Goodfellas”
Bert Lahr in “The Wizard of Oz”
Zero in “The Producers”
Linus explaining
the true meaning
of Christmas
I’ve lived in
and through
these movies
more than five times
each
and now I want
to see them
all
again.

Exotic Flowers and Ethereal Memories
I hail from
Boys Only
planet.
On the
televisual dataport,
I saw
girls,
women,
ladies,
from another galaxy
with curiosity,
open-mouthed wonder.
They smiled
and sang,
they reminded me
of exotic flowers
and ethereal melodies.
For the longest time
the only one of them
I knew
was our Queen Mother,
who was really just a man
with wide hips
and a bullet bra.
I snuck
off to the
launch pad,
years before
my scheduled
puberty flight,
and crash-landed
uninvited,
and tried to
infiltrate their
world.
I watched
from a distance,
amazed
but timid:
they were all
too smart,
too strong,
too capable and
too beautiful
for me.
All I wanted was
their approbation,
their approval,
their recognition,
all things
the Queen Mother
didn’t,
couldn’t
wouldn’t
provide.

and Suddenly, it was Clear (for Anita)
A little before midnight
on my way back
to my bachelor apartment
her perfume still in my nose
her heat still on my skin
my mind replayed
the evening:
we sat with the kids
laughing at
“Spongebob Squarepants”
and after they fell asleep,
we did likewise
in each other’s embrace.
It felt like home,
but there I was
driving back to a place
I called home.
As I came up
to the intersection of
Alessandro and Moreno Beach
an idea I’d banished
long ago
floated in
like a leaf
through an open window
and suddenly,
it was clear,
and I said it aloud:
“I’m going to marry that girl.”

The Foggy Unknown
Just as we
cannot predict
which hue of blue
the sky will be today,
or how the really
best films
are going to end,
or how sweet
the red-black cherry is,
no one knows
exactly
how this will
turn out.
I couldn’t predict
my world changing
-thunder loud and
lightening fast-
with a phone call,
telling me Pop died
unexpectedly
two days after
his own mother died.
My world was
not just thrown,
but cosmically fucked
off its axis,
my compass pointed
in every direction
and each way ahead
was soft, foggy
and unknown.
Some paths were bright,
some dark gray,
a few even black,
but none of them
were clear.
I got lost trying to find
my way back
to my life before,
until eventually,
I gave up that
search,
realizing
his death
also erased
who I thought
I was.
Only when I accepted
I couldn’t go back,
then I started moving
forward.
Be not afraid
of what the world
and this life have
waiting for you.
Stay open to
the foggy unknown
for one day
it will be
your turn,
and then you’ll be
reunited,
and it’ll all
make sense.
Right now,
however,
it remains
a heartbreaking
mystery.

Trance
Nightly
I sit in the cool spring air,
rocking back and forth
on the patio swing,
trying to put myself
into a trance.
I inhale
the cannabis vape,
and play the recording
of Liz Damon’s Oriental Express
singing “1900 Yesterday.”
I am drawn
to this hopelessly dated
recording,
anachronistic for 1971,
it must seem positively
prehistoric now.
“Where's the love
that we knew,
is it gone,
or have you
thrown it away?”
Something about
those voices,
that 1960’s Hollywood sound,
takes me back
to my earliest memories
of something beautiful,
someone unblemished.
I perform this ritual
hoping one day
it will be
the key
that unlocks
who I really am,
who I really was
before the crash.

The Long, Brown Line
The line at the AM/PM
was long
and short
and dark brown.
These day laborers
who manicure the lawns
of the wealthy
and add the aftermarket
water fountains
to the McMansions
were stocking up
for the day:
coffee,
chewing tobacco,
and 2 for 1 hot dogs
overstuffed with
free condiments.
I look like I could be
related to them
through some long brown line
of ancestry.
They would
probably speak respectfully
to my mom,
probably work hard all day in the sun and
probably are here
illegally.
I stood at
at the end of the line
with another kind of brown.
He reminded me of
my dad:
He looked like
he was first-generation
Mexican-American,
who grew up
aspiring to assimilate..
He looked like
he earned the American Dream
owned his own home
sent his kids through college,
and even voted Republican.
I don’t know
what he assumed about me,
in my suit and tie
on my way to
my white collar job
in academia.
Perhaps he thought
he’d found a kindred spirit.
Referring to that line of
brown distant relatives ahead,
he turned to me
and in tones
mocking and conspiratorial
said
“Boy, Immigration would have
a field day here, huh?”
At that point
he stopped reminding me
of my dad.
I gave him
the cold, indifferent stare
I reserve for racists
and the otherwise
aggressively
ignorant
and channeled my father:
and I replied,
“No se.”

The Challenge Remains
He made it
simple yet profound,
like a still pond,
a crow flying away,
a night hiding stars,
a misunderstood sob,
a narcotic slumber,
a perfectly-sweetened coffee,
a silent funeral,
humble, serving love,
electric anticipation,
a familiar embrace,
the dog dancing hello,
the crack of the bat,
new music from old strings.
I first heard him
when I was 17
and the challenge
remains steadfast:
he not busy
being born
is busy dying.
[Written for Kerry at Real Toads - the line comes from my favorite Bob Dylan song "It's Alright, MA, I'm Only Bleeding." Time to listen to it again. ]

Twin Serpents
Take this desire
and tie it to memory
and purify it in the flames.
My ego is a zombie
of unquenchable thirst
and it needs more brains
than I have to feast upon.
I do not want
a mirror made of
website hits
and reader posts.
Take these
twin serpents
and wash me clean.
Lord, hold me under
long enough
to drown
all these predictable
demons
and raise me up
through this baptism
anew,
without memory,
a virtuous
happy
amnesiac.

Welcome to My Mind
Something’s not right,
yet there’s nothing
to point at.
It’s a cold jittery jangle
in my chest --
my limbs ticklish
and waiting to spring
into action.
My brain restlessly
turning over every stone
with no clue
what it is looking for,
but I know it’s feverishly working
because my head
is sweating.
Of all the things
that can go wrong
which will it be?
My wife?
My kids?
My job?
My car?
Popping and jumping,
my mind reconstructs
past events
looking for the telltale clue,
the smoking gun,
the fatal flaw.
What is coming
that will undo me?
I try to predict when
and where my good luck
will dry up and blow away
like daisies
in a sandstorm.
“Trust in God”
“If God is with me”
etc etc etc
holy holy, …
God is calm,
no reason not to be.
God likes seeing me off-balance
every now and again,
keeps me humble
keeps me compliant
and God’s probably right
to do so
because we both know me
and if I am not on my toes
I get lazy
and the pencil remains ignored.
So this anxiety
is the call
to creation
to inquiry
to reconnection.
This connection doesn’t kill
the shivering anxiety
but it comforts me
for a while
as I wait for
the other shoe to drop.
yet there’s nothing
to point at.

The Driverless Car
Where a never ending spray
of bullets don’t kill,
a driverless car
sails perfectly
over a cliff,
and somewhere
a lone brown bear is howling
at the buttery, autumn moon.
The oceans inch
higher and higher up the shore
we keep buying
and buying
and buying
and buying.
Pills and tinctures
keep me mollified,
and I don’t care
who is trying to control
my life,
because I haven’t the energy
or inspiration
to own it myself.
So I keep relaunching
from the side of the road,
merging back in
with the rest of the traffic,
each car
and truck and cycle
racing to arrive someplace
that rarely lives up
to the expectation.
The dream is false
and it gnaws,
unsated by
more purchases
more looking
more meals
more orgasms
more thrills.
Nothing can free
the captive soul
that scans
tirelessly and futilely
for something
from the outside
that will fix
the inside.
If you can
find a crack
in the façade,
turn the searchlights
inward.
Follow the cries
of the baby in the dark
and comfort him.
of bullets don’t kill,
a driverless car
sails perfectly
over a cliff,
and somewhere
a lone brown bear is howling
at the buttery, autumn moon.
The oceans inch
higher and higher up the shore
we keep buying
and buying
and buying
and buying.

The Grand Irony
In earliest days,
when our love
was new,
I was
a vulnerable sapling,
subject to
wind and whim.
Years later,
our love has roots
and I am a tree
deep and unyielding,
and we live, grow
in our treehouse
safe and secure
from all natural predators.
Ironically,
now that we have
the depth of passion
and commitment
of this life shared,
some nights
this tree
just can't summon
the wood.
when our love
was new,
I was
a vulnerable sapling,
subject to
wind and whim.
Years later,
our love has roots
and I am a tree
deep and unyielding,
and we live, grow
in our treehouse
safe and secure
from all natural predators.
Ironically,
now that we have
the depth of passion
and commitment
of this life shared,
some nights
this tree
just can't summon
the wood.

I Refuse
I refuse
to believe that darkness
will vanquish the light
permanently.
I refuse
to distrust you
just because
we do not look alike.
I refuse
to believe
that my side
is infallible.
I refuse
to join others
out of fear
instead than love.
I refuse
to dogpile on the
lone,
dissenting voice.
I refuse
your negativity,
your avarice,
your pessimism.
If you offer me
your friendship,
your time,
or your love,
in exchange
for my belief
in the inherent
good of my fellow,
then,
I refuse.
to believe that darkness
will vanquish the light
permanently.
I refuse
to distrust you
just because
we do not look alike.
I refuse
to believe
that my side
is infallible.
I refuse
to join others
out of fear
instead than love.
I refuse
to dogpile on the
lone,
dissenting voice.
I refuse
your negativity,
your avarice,
your pessimism.
If you offer me
your friendship,
your time,
or your love,
in exchange
for my belief
in the inherent
good of my fellow,
then,
I refuse.
